Mongolian Stampede
Mongolian Stampede
Horses stampeding across the Mongolian Steppe, while on assignment for National Geographic.
I was in Mongolia watching a herd of 1000 horses running across the steppe, when they all turned and started running towards me. I had nowhere to go, nothing to hide behind, and no time to get out of their way. The next thing I knew I was surrounded by horses running at full tilt. I was sure I was going to get trampled, but the horses somehow all knew exactly where I was and the herd parted just enough to pass me without incident. It’s to this day one of the most powerful experiences I’ve had with animals, and led to one of my favorite images.
